Hectic work schedules; “no time to do anything other than the routine” days and weekends; and the possibility of Kerala weather being rather pleasant during late October combined in a good way – we decided to head to Kovilakam resorts, near Alapuzha.

We had traveled to this place before, and had enjoyed our stay there. This promised to be a laid back experience, in a clean and well maintained property. The property is situated on the bank of the Vembanad lake; and on the quieter bank – Muhamma -, the one opposite to the ever popular and touristy Kumarakom.

We didn’t have plans of doing anything, once there. The idea was to get some decent sleep, laze a lot, have good food, and hopefully get to read some of the books we had taken along. Managed to do all of this.

The food at Kovilakam is yum; we settled mostly for Kerala style vegetarian fare. Breakfasts of puttu-kadala-curry, poori, dosa. Lunch and dinner with the likes of ulli-theeyal, channa-batura, and other usual South Indian food options.

The weather was pleasant, and staring at the lake in front of our room, expanding all the way to the horizon, was a meditative experience. Rather relaxing to do this, for extended periods of time.

On one day, we took the ferry to Kumarkom, with a plan of having lunch there. Randomly chose a resort – the “Backwater ripples” – and the lunch was good. That was the most we did, during this trip.

Managed to read a good portion of John Keay’s “China”; maybe we should plan for a month trip from the next time onward.

Some photos here.
